Album Review: Journey, "Eclipse"

With the belated success of Don't Stop Believing, Arnel Pineda is always going to be fighting an uphill battle to step out of Steve Perry's vocal shadow, but on Eclipse he shows he has a 'personality' of his own.

Make no mistake though, this record is Neal Schon's baby. His guitar is front and centre and drives it forward as a rock orientated entity. That said, there are some truly sublime moments, City of Love soars, Edge Of The Moment rocks on Schon's six string sting, while Chain Of Love boasts a driving almost Kashmir-like rhythm over which Pineda nails his vocal chords. It obviously wouldn't be a Journey album without a ballad and the standout To Whom It May Concern is suitably overblown and grandiose. In essence a solid Journey album from a band that still stand head and shoulders above their AOR competition!
