Revenge Recommends: "Rock n' Roll Suicide" by David Bowie

Rock n' Roll Sucide is the song that best captures the essence of David Bowie's conflicted incarnation as Ziggy Stardust, a kind of mental avatar that Bowie seems to have developed as a way of channeling and dealing with the first burst of rock n' roll fame that followed his first hit Space Oddity in 1969.

Despite the intense psychological pressures that expressed themselves in the character and the song, this rather plodding performance shows that by this stage, the character and the concept of Ziggy was already played out, and this is actually Bowie's final performance in the guise of Ziggy.

The show, recorded in
D.A.Pennebaker's concert movie Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, took place at the Hammersmith Odeon and was the last gig on Bowie's 1973 tour, promoting his album Aladdin Sane.

Bowie's intro:

"Everybody, this is me...One of the greatest tours of our life. we really...Of all the show on the tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest because not only is it the last show of the tour, it is the last show we'll ever do. Thank you."

Lyrics:

Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then your cigarette
Well the wall-to-wall is calling, it lingers, but still you forget
Ohhh, you're a rock n roll suicide

You're too young to lose it, but you're too old to lose it
And the clocks waits so patiently on your song
Well you walk past a cafe but you can't eat when you've lived too long
Ohhh, you're a rock n roll suicide

Now a Chev brakes are snarling, as you stumble across the road
But the day breaks instead so you hurry home
Don't let the sunlight blast your shadow
Don't let the milk float ride your mind
You're so natural, religiously unkind

Oh no love, you're not alone
You're watching yourself but you're too unfair
You got your head all tangled up but if I could only
Make you care
Oh no love! you're not alone
No matter what or who you've been
No matter when or where you've seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I've had my share, I'll help you with the pain
You're not alone

Just turn on with me and you're not alone
Just turn on with me and you're not alone
Just gimme your hands cause you're wonderful (wonderful)
I said, gimme your hands cause you're wonderful (wonderful)
Gimme your hands cause you're wonderful (wonderful)
Gimme your hands cause you're wonderful (wonderful)
Gimme your hands cause you're wonderful (wonderful)
Gimme your hands
Gimme your hands
Cause you're wonderful
Gimme your hands cause you're wonderful
